Sustainable Oxidation Processes: Sodium Percarbonate as an Eco-Friendly Alternative in Industrial Bleaching

Nachhaltige Oxidationsprozesse: Natriumpercarbonat als umweltfreundliche Alternative in der industriellen Bleiche

Optimizing production chains from an ecological perspective is one of the central tasks of modern industry. Especially in sectors with high water and chemical consumption, such as textile and paper processing, classic bleaching agents are increasingly under pressure. The search for efficient, chlorine-free alternatives in practice increasingly leads to a proven powerhouse of industrial chemistry: Sodium Percarbonate (Na2CO3 x 1.5H2O2, CAS No. 15630-89-4, EC No. 239-707-6).

As a solid, storage-stable compound of sodium carbonate (soda) and hydrogen peroxide, this raw material offers a highly effective method for making industrial bleaching and oxidation processes sustainable.

The Oxidative Mechanism: Bleaching with the Power of Oxygen

In contrast to chlorine-based bleaching agents, which can form potentially environmentally harmful by-products (such as AOX), the effect of sodium percarbonate is based on a purely oxidative and residue-free principle.

In aqueous solution, the substance decomposes in a controlled manner into its starting components. The actual functional process in industrial application proceeds as follows:

  • Activation of Oxygen: Upon thermal or chemical activation in the process liquor, active oxygen is released.

  • Targeted Decolorization: The free oxygen selectively attacks the chromophoric (color-imparting) groups of organic soiling, impurities, or natural pigments in the raw material.

  • Structure Preservation: The molecules are split by oxidation and made water-soluble. Since the process is gentler on materials than the use of elemental chlorine, the original quality and tear strength of the treated fibers are optimally preserved.

Overview of Primary B2B Application Areas

The high purity of the offered goods (quality level: Clean / Pure) in the practical 5000g container predestines the product for use in demanding industrial cycles:

  1. Textile Industry (Fabric and Yarn Bleaching): Effective removal of natural discoloration on raw fibers before the actual dyeing process, without chemically weakening the fabric.

  2. Paper and Pulp Industry: Application in modern bleaching processes for producing bright, high-white pulp, thereby significantly reducing the ecological footprint of the production facility.

  3. Manufacture of Cleaning Systems: Formulation of industrial cleaners and stain removers for large-scale laundries and surface technology.

⚠️ Safety Management & Legal Requirements (CLP)

Sodium percarbonate is a strong oxidizing agent. Responsible handling in an industrial environment with strict adherence to the H and P statements is mandatory.

  • Hazard Statements (H-Statements): H272 (May intensify fire; oxidizer). H302 (Harmful if swallowed). H318 (Causes serious eye damage).

  • Safety Precautions (P-Statements): Keep away from heat, sparks, open flames, and hot surfaces (P210). No smoking. Take all measures against electrostatic discharges (P221). When handling, wearing protective gloves, protective clothing, eye protection, and face protection (P280) is mandatory.

  • First Aid for Eye Contact (P305+P351+P338): Rinse cautiously with water for several minutes. Remove contact lenses if present and easy to do. Continue rinsing. Immediately call a POISON CENTER or doctor (P310).

Storage Instructions for Large Containers

To maintain the full reactivity of the 5 kg container in the long term, sodium percarbonate must be stored in an absolutely dry and well-ventilated place. Contact with moisture leads to premature decomposition. Storage must be strictly separated from combustible materials, heat sources, or incompatible chemical reagents. Always keep containers hermetically sealed.
