One of the main applications of urea is agriculture. As a nitrogen-containing fertilizer, urea plays a crucial role in supplying crops with the essential nutrient nitrogen. Nitrogen is essential for plant growth and development, as it is needed, among other things, for the formation of proteins and chlorophyll.

Urea-based fertilizers are characterized by their high nitrogen concentration of up to 46% and are therefore very efficient in application. Furthermore, urea is easily soluble in water, allowing nutrients to be quickly absorbed by plants. Modern coated urea products also provide controlled, demand-driven nutrient release, minimizing losses due to leaching or evaporation.

Urea-formaldehyde resins, for example, are used in wood processing, such as for the production of particle boards or veneer. Besides synthetic resins, urea also plays an important role in the production of foam. Here it serves as a blowing agent to support expansion and pore formation. Urea-based foam products have diverse applications, for example in mattresses, upholstered furniture, or insulation materials.

Another area of application for urea in industry is the production of refrigerants. Urea-based refrigerants are characterized by high energy efficiency and environmental compatibility and are therefore increasingly used in modern cooling and air conditioning systems.

Urea in cosmetics and body care

Besides agriculture and industry, urea also finds diverse applications in the cosmetics and body care sector. Here it is especially valued for its moisturizing and skin-caring properties.

In creams, lotions, and other skincare products, urea serves as an effective moisturizing factor. It binds water in the skin and thus prevents drying out. Furthermore, urea supports the natural moisture balance of the skin by increasing the water content in the upper skin layers.

But urea has further positive effects on the skin. It also has keratolytic properties, meaning it promotes the shedding of the horny layer and thus supports the natural renewal process of the skin. This makes urea especially valuable for the treatment of skin conditions such as neurodermatitis, psoriasis, or ichthyosis.

In addition to its use in skincare products, urea is also used in hair care products. Here it serves as a humectant and smoothing agent to improve hair structure and shine.
